Car Key Replacement Guide

Author: Noam Taube

Lost or broke your car key and not sure what to do? You have several options depending on the type of car key that was lost.  You can either order a key online, head to your local car dealer or get a Hayward locksmith to replace the key for you. But first, you need to identify which type of key you have. These are the most common types:

Transponder Key: Sometimes called chip key, because it is embedded with a programmed chip that has its own unique code meant to be read only by your car's transponder system. A lost transponder key means that a replacement key will have to be reprogrammed (preferably by a Hayward locksmith) so that it is read by the ignition. If not programmed correctly, the ignition will fail to start, so it is important to choose wisely when looking for a locksmith to replace your key.

Remote Car Key: a remote car key allows you to open the car door from away. A lost or broken remote key will also need to be programmed by an expert.

Switchblade Key and Key fobs: Switchblade keys are the newest invention. They are very popular thanks to their compact appearance. The truth is, they are not much different from a transponder key; the only difference is that the key blade can fold away into a key fob. So it is more convenient and takes up less space.

So now that you know a bit about car keys, try to determine which car key you have. If your key requires programming, your best bet is to call a local Hayward locksmith to get it replaced.  Locksmith companies as opposed to a local car dealer will save you money and are usually able to offer this service on the spot. A reputable locksmith company should be able to program keys for almost any car model.
